Robin Bibeault, Clinical Case Manager • Case Management
Nominated by Lori Pawlow, Nursing Director • Case Management
Robin was working with a long-term patient who had been at UConn for just shy of 2 years. The Case Management team had been unable to secure a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) placement for this patient. Robin persevered and requested that a SNF come onsite to evaluate the patient. They agreed, and as a result of Robin’s persistence and advocacy, she was successful in securing a bed at the SNF. The patient was ultimately discharged to the facility.
She evaluated the patient and recognized that the patient’s needs had changed, which the SNF did not initially identify. Robin pointed this out and persisted in asking the SNF to come and reassess the patient in person. That reassessment made all the difference in moving the discharge forward.
Robin is always professional and remains a strong advocate for the patients she follows. She consistently ensures that patients’ evolving needs are recognized and addressed appropriately.
She also regularly calls post-acute care providers to offer explanations and ensure they have the correct information. She always takes the time to make sure patients have what they need at discharge and that care transitions are safe and well-coordinated.

Beyond this, Cathy contributed to a larger, highly collaborative initiative to develop a new care model for alopecia areata. She built a comprehensive SmartSet to support initiation of JAK inhibitor therapy, incorporating complex baseline testing and monitoring requirements. She also partnered with the team to refine documentation workflows and integrate pre-visit data collection tools, helping streamline care delivery.
Importantly, Cathy’s work has extended beyond internal impact. Shannon Egan, Staff Nurse CN2 - Outpatient • UMG - Internal Medicine
Nominated by Elaine Gaston, Staff Nurse CN4 • UMG - Internal Medicine
Shannon is the heart of the UConn Internal Medicine Clinic. Her very challenging life experiences, along with her many years of nursing experience—all at UConn—have made her an incredible resource in Internal Medicine as well as across ancillary departments at UConn. She is constantly providing positive feedback to peers, advocating for patients, and ensuring the highest level of safe, quality patient care.
Her awesome attitude helps shape the staff she works with. She leads by example, even in challenging situations. In primary care, nurses build long-term relationships with patients and help guide them through complex health issues over time. Shannon takes this responsibility to another level and is often called upon by both staff and patients to help them navigate difficult moments.
Shannon’s work ethic is exceptional. I have worked with her in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and she consistently puts aside personal challenges to prioritize her patients. She actively seeks out resources for patients and helps coordinate services that might otherwise not be available. She is always early, willing to help in any situation, and continually looking for ways to improve. She is truly inspiring.
Also, Shannon’s superior service is a tremendous asset to UConn. She helps facilitate patient flow in a clinic with 60 medical providers, which is no small task. Even with such high volume, she ensures every individual feels like the most important person when she is speaking with them. I speak for our entire clinic in saying that UConn would be lost without her.
Priscilla Fretz, Assistant Privacy Officer • Healthcare Compliance and Privacy
Nominated by Hillary Barigye, Adm Program Coordinator • Healthcare Compliance and Privacy
Priscilla is the kind of team member who works quietly and diligently behind the scenes so that everyone else can do their jobs with confidence. When our organization undertook the integration of the Imprivata system, a complex, organization-wide initiative touching both patient and workforce data, Priscilla didn’t just participate, she showed up fully. Privacy work can often feel invisible until something goes wrong, but Priscilla makes it visible in the best way through her presence, her patience, and her genuine investment in the people around her. She doesn’t just protect data, she supports her teammates by giving them the knowledge and tools they need to do their work safely and confidently.
She has the rare gift of making complex, sometimes intimidating subject matter feel approachable and even engaging. Privacy regulations and data governance are not topics most people naturally look forward to learning, but Priscilla approaches them with the heart of a true teacher. She meets people where they are, explains concepts with patience and clarity, and never makes anyone feel small for not knowing something. Her attitude reflects genuine care for her colleagues, for the patients whose data she protects, and for the mission of the organization. Even when the work is difficult or the stakes are high, Priscilla brings a calm, positive energy that steadies the people around her. She is the kind of colleague who lifts an entire team without ever seeking recognition for it.
Priscilla works extremely hard, and she does so consistently, not just when it is convenient or when someone is watching. Leading the rollout of the Imprivata system was no small feat. It required sustained effort, careful coordination, and an enormous amount of behind-the-scenes work that many colleagues may never fully see. Priscilla took that responsibility on with dedication and follow-through, guiding the project from planning through implementation. Beyond this major initiative, her day-to-day commitment to protecting patient and workforce data is an ongoing responsibility that she takes seriously every single day. She has also invested deeply in her own professional growth by earning both a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Master of Laws (LLM) degree, a reflection of someone who consistently pushes herself to grow and excel.
Her leadership of the Imprivata rollout stands as a strong example of superior service. Integrating a system designed to protect both patient and workforce data required technical expertise, change management, cross-departmental coordination, and a deep commitment to getting it right. Priscilla brought all of that and more. She earned her Imprivata Patient Privacy Intelligence Administrator Certificate to ensure she had the expertise to lead the effort at the highest level. What truly sets Priscilla apart, however, is that her service extends beyond projects and systems. She has personally mentored colleagues, encouraged professional development, and supported others in pursuing certifications and growth opportunities. That is superior service in its truest form, not only doing her job exceptionally well, but making the people around her better in the process. Priscilla doesn’t just protect patient and workforce data, she helps build a culture of privacy, trust, and support throughout the organization.
Todd Jackson, Application Analyst 3 • IT Clinical Systems
Nominated by Katy Coyle, Univ Director • UMG - Orthopedics
Whenever I am assigned a project with the Epic Ambulatory Team, I am always grateful when Todd is leading the work. His professionalism, expertise, follow-through, and positive attitude make him an absolute pleasure to work with. He is inclusive in his approach and consistently welcomes feedback and collaboration from his peers.
You can tell Todd genuinely enjoys what he does because he brings a positive and flexible attitude to every project. Some initiatives require a much heavier lift from the Ambulatory Epic Team than others, and Todd consistently approaches those challenges with eagerness, professionalism, and a willingness to help find solutions.
Every project I have worked on with Todd has been a great experience. He is responsive, knowledgeable, flexible, and incredibly easy to work with. He clearly takes pride in his work, and it shows in both the quality of the outcomes and the way he supports the people around him.
I recently partnered with Todd on a project to convert a hard-copy document, the DME Surgicare form, into an electronic version within Epic. The goal was to improve efficiency, reduce documentation errors, and eliminate paper processes. Given everything happening across the organization, I expected the project would take some time to complete. It required reformatting the original form as well as coordination and discussions with our vendor. Todd was assigned to the project, and within just two weeks he had successfully completed his portion of the work. Throughout the process, he was communicative, collaborative, and kept me informed every step of the way. Todd is a wonderful example of the professionalism, teamwork, and dedication we value so highly at UConn Health.
Andrew Leardi, Staff Nurse CN2 - Outpatient • Cardiology
Nominated by Kari Criqui, Nurse Manager, and Linda Manzelli, Director, Ambulatory Practice • Cardiology
A remote ICD transmission received in the clinic revealed new-onset atrial fibrillation with RVR. A subsequent transmission on Friday showed an ICD shock. Despite multiple attempts, the APP was unable to reach the patient or his family.
Andrew, Cardiology RN, also attempted to contact both the patient and his sister to advise immediate evaluation in the emergency department, but neither answered. Given the concern for patient safety, Andrew contacted the local police department to request a wellness check. Follow-up with the police revealed that the patient had recently moved to Maine.
On Monday, Andrew successfully reached the patient’s sister, who then contacted the patient and directed him to go to the emergency department. The patient confirmed he was now residing in Maine. During follow-up, Andrew learned that the patient had awakened on the floor the prior week, believing he had rolled out of bed—an event later suspected to have been an ICD shock.
Andrew continued persistent outreach to both the patient and his sister to ensure appropriate care was obtained. The patient ultimately presented to the emergency department on Tuesday. He was initially evaluated at a local hospital in Maine and subsequently transferred to a higher level of care, where he was found to be in cardiogenic shock. His ejection fraction, previously 35%, had declined to 10–15%, and cardiac life support devices were placed.
Thank you, Andrew, for your persistence, clinical vigilance, and dedication to ensuring this patient received the lifesaving care he urgently needed.Valerie Ling, Nurse Manager • JDH - Prof Prac and Clin Excellence

Michael Martins, Staff Nurse CN2 • Intensive Care Unit
Nominated by Brianne Murray, Staff Nurse CN2 • Intensive Care Unit
Mike Martins exemplifies what it means to be part of a team in our ICU. During a recent shift, I had an extremely unstable patient who was actively crashing and maxed on multiple pressors. The situation was high acuity and evolving quickly. Mike stepped in immediately without being asked. He helped assess hemodynamics and guided adjustments while ensuring we were aligned with the broader care team. His calm, collaborative presence helped stabilize not only the patient but the entire room. He communicates clearly with physicians, respiratory therapy, and nursing staff, and ensures everyone understands the clinical picture. Mike strengthens our unit by being the person people seek out when things are critical, and he never hesitates to help.
Even in high-stress, life-threatening situations, Mike maintains a calm, focused, and solution-oriented attitude. During the crashing patient scenario, while tensions were understandably high, he remained composed and steady. He does not panic. He thinks critically and supports those around him. His demeanor instills confidence in both colleagues and providers. He is approachable, respectful, and generous with his knowledge, especially regarding complex devices like the Swan, Impella, and IABP. His positive and professional attitude elevates team morale during some of the most difficult shifts.
Mike demonstrates an exceptional work ethic through his deep clinical knowledge and willingness to apply it to support others. He is highly proficient in advanced hemodynamic monitoring and mechanical circulatory support devices. He takes the time to ensure data is interpreted correctly and interventions are purposeful. During my critically ill patient’s decline, he stayed engaged, assisted with troubleshooting, and helped ensure no detail was overlooked. He is dependable, thorough, and committed to delivering safe, high-level critical care. His standards are high, and he models what excellence in ICU nursing looks like.
His superior service is evident in how he supports both patients and colleagues during the most vulnerable moments. With advanced devices like the Swan, Impella, and IABP, he not only manages them competently but also helps others understand the physiology behind the numbers. During my patient’s deterioration, his expertise and steady guidance directly contributed to organized, effective care. He goes above and beyond routine responsibilities by offering real-time education, troubleshooting complex equipment, and prioritizing patient safety. His impact extends beyond individual assignments. He strengthens the entire unit’s ability to provide exceptional critical care.
Lindsay Murphy, Social Worker 2 • UMG - Administration
Nominated by Kristen Cannata, Clinical Program Coordinator • Clinical Effectiveness Admin
Lindsay went above and beyond for one of our heart failure patients with a very complex social situation and likely end-stage heart failure. The patient had been discharged from another facility but previously followed with UConn Cardiology, so we placed a social work referral early given the significant barriers anticipated in ensuring he received the care he needed. Lindsay immediately stepped in and took ownership of the case. She worked with an interdisciplinary team to help the patient obtain food, maintain electricity, address immigration concerns, and secure medications, among other critical needs. She also coordinated closely with cardiology providers to keep them updated and to request support when needed, and she engaged town resources, social work, and Elderly Protective Services due to clear concerns about the patient’s safety and ability to manage independently at home.
The patient did not speak English, which added another layer of complexity, but Lindsay consistently used interpreter services to ensure he fully understood what was happening and what support was being arranged. I cannot imagine how stressful it must have been on the other end of the phone, working through so many systems to ensure this patient received the care and resources he needed while continuing to pursue every possible avenue for help. Throughout it all, she remained patient-centered, supportive, and persistent, and she followed up multiple times to provide updates and check on his status.
Although I have never met Lindsay in person, it is clear from her numerous telephone encounters with this patient that she never gave up on him and truly had his best interests at heart. After speaking with Lindsay’s supervisor, it was also clear that this challenging case is just one example of the level of work she consistently delivers. I was so impressed by her advocacy and persistence in this situation that I wanted to nominate her for a PAWS recognition.
This case clearly reflects the definition of superior service. This patient is someone who may never be able to directly recognize her efforts, and yet Lindsay still provided an exceptional level of care, advocacy, and follow-through to ensure he received the help he needed.
Kristie Perry, Clinical Case Manager • Case Management
Nominated by Lori Pawlow, Nursing Director • Case Management
Kristie is a patient advocate who consistently goes above and beyond to support patients during their recovery. She takes the time to listen, provide guidance, and deliver care when patients need it most, helping them meet their goals and navigate complex transitions.
One example that stands out is when she supported a patient who had been at UConn for over six months while waiting for a conservator and pay source for long-term care placement. When everything was finally in place and EMS arrived at the bedside, the patient became extremely anxious, yelling and refusing to leave due to fear and uncertainty about going to a new facility where she did not know anyone. Kristie recognized the patient’s distress and immediately stepped in to help de-escalate the situation. She asked the EMS crew if she could accompany the patient to help ease the transition, and they agreed. Kristie then joined the UConn Fire/ambulance crew and personally escorted the patient to the skilled nursing facility.
Once there, she introduced the patient to her roommate and helped her begin to feel more comfortable in the new environment. Kristie did all of this on her own time and did not return until 8 p.m., dedicating additional hours to ensure the patient felt safe and supported during a very vulnerable transition.
Kristie consistently puts patients’ interests first. She is a strong team lead on her unit, always looking out for her peers and stepping in to help when needed. She also demonstrates strong leadership during IDR rounds and remains open to improving workflows and processes. She is truly a dedicated and effective case manager who embodies patient-centered care and advocacy.

Through unwavering compassion, clinical expertise, and tireless advocacy, Anita consistently goes above and beyond to improve patient outcomes and experiences. For example, one evening while leaving work, she noticed a woman who was lost and in distress. The patient had a large lump on her head, bruising, and visual changes after being assaulted at work. Without hesitation, Anita helped her into her car and drove her to the ED. The patient was incredibly grateful, calling Anita an “angel” and saying the world needs more people like her.

Jenn demonstrates an exceptional work ethic. She is reliable, flexible, and consistently willing to step in to support her team. She is well respected by both coworkers and providers, and many seek her out for guidance due to her responsiveness and strong patient communication skills.
Recently, Jenn went above and beyond on multiple occasions by staying late with patients whose transportation did not arrive on time. In one instance, she remained with a 100-year-old patient whose ride did not come until approximately 7 p.m., one hour after Jenn’s shift had ended. The patient had been in the clinic for surgery and Jenn made sure she was comfortable, warm, and cared for by providing blankets and a snack. She also extended the same kindness to the patient’s aide, who had been present for several hours. The patient was so appreciative that she invited Jenn to her 101st birthday party. On another occasion that same week, Jenn stayed late again with a different patient experiencing transportation issues, ensuring she was comfortable and cared for until her ride arrived. In both situations, Jenn remained until the patients were safely picked up, demonstrating true compassion and commitment to patient care.

Nadine Wang, Staff Nurse CN2 • Neag Cancer Center (JDH)
Nominated by Beth Schwartz, Associate Director • Neag Cancer Center (JDH)
Nadine is a team player and is always willing to help her peers. She is responsive to the needs of others and works well with her team in the Cancer Center Infusion area. Nadine maintains a positive outlook and views challenging situations as learning experiences. She is compassionate with patients and consistently builds strong rapport with those she cares for.
She has been recognized by her peers for an important clinical “good catch.” One of the infusion RNs brought forward recognition of Nadine for her careful assessment and escalation of care. A patient was seen in clinic the day prior, where documentation noted clear discharge from the bilateral lower extremities and skin breakdown with scratch marks. The APRN was consulted at that time and indicated this was an expected side effect of treatment, and the patient was cleared for infusion.
However, upon assessment in infusion the following day, Nadine noted the patient was reporting discomfort in the bilateral lower extremities. She completed a thorough reassessment and identified that the patient’s legs had open, odorous, weeping wounds with sloughing tissue. Despite the prior clearance, Nadine appropriately escalated her concerns and contacted the APRN of the day to reassess the patient before proceeding with treatment. As a result, treatment was held, the wounds were appropriately treated and dressed, and the patient was prescribed antibiotics. Nadine’s careful assessment and advocacy directly contributed to preventing potential harm and ensuring appropriate care.
Nadine was also recently recognized by a patient for her compassion and empathy during a series of iron infusions. The patient shared that after experiencing significant GI distress following an initial iron push infusion, she explained her concerns to Nadine at her next visit. Nadine responded with immediate concern and compassion and adjusted the infusion method to IV administration, which resolved the issue for the remainder of treatment.
Beyond the clinical adjustment, the patient described how Nadine consistently provided emotional support during each visit, taking time to sit with her, talk with her, and offer comfort during moments of fear and vulnerability. The patient, a cancer survivor, shared her anxiety about a possible recurrence, and described how Nadine supported her through those emotions with empathy and presence, even sharing tears when needed. The patient noted that Nadine’s kindness, calm demeanor, and reassuring presence made her feel safe and cared for, and that she began looking forward to treatments because of her.
The patient ultimately shared that she was later diagnosed with stage 3B colon cancer, underwent major surgery and treatment, and has since recovered. She credited Nadine’s compassion and support during a frightening time as a meaningful source of strength throughout her journey. The patient described Nadine as a “Godsend and angel nurse,” expressing deep gratitude for the care she received.

Kinsha is an absolute pleasure to work with and consistently brings a positive, upbeat attitude to every interaction. She approaches her work with curiosity and a strong willingness to learn, while treating everyone with respect and as equals. Her positivity and openness help create a supportive and collaborative environment for those around her.
Kinsha consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic through her proactive and collaborative approach. She takes initiative by reaching out to the lab when she notices trends, such as increases in canceled tests, to better understand root causes and identify solutions. She is always willing to ask how she can help, and her efforts consistently lead to positive outcomes for both the team and patient care.
When the lab experienced an increase in canceled tests from Kinsha’s clinic area, she took the initiative to visit the lab in person to better understand the workflow and help identify solutions. This effort went well beyond her job responsibilities and demonstrated her strong commitment to collaboration and patient care.
She also goes the extra mile by proactively following up with patients one month after they receive their kits to ensure they are returned before expiration. Through these efforts, Kinsha has helped drive a noticeable decrease in cancellations for this test. Her initiative and dedication consistently reflect a commitment to delivering superior service.

Her ability to anticipate risks, advocate for patients, and implement proactive solutions reflects extraordinary dedication to superior service and patient-centered care.
Kera Yeager, Staff Nurse CN2 - Outpatient • Clinical Neurophysiology
Nominated by Kari Criqui, Nurse Manager • Cardiology
Kera started in the Neurodiagnostic Clinic in January, and since then she has gone above and beyond for her patients on a daily basis. One example that stands out involves a long-time patient who had been unable to receive the infusions needed to stabilize his condition due to lack of insurance coverage and inability to afford treatment.
She reached out to multiple resources, including various companies, home care services, and medication representatives, to explore options for financial assistance, though initially without success. She persisted and made one final attempt with another company, ultimately securing several doses of medication for the patient at no cost until his new insurance coverage begins.
There is no task Kera cannot accomplish. She is consistently willing to help in any way she can, both for patients and for her colleagues. In this example, Kera demonstrated that persistence truly pays off in a meaningful way for patients. A few additional phone calls helped resolve a barrier that had impacted this patient for nearly a year.

The Nurses Week Committee exemplified Togetherness, Effort, Attitude, and Motivation through their seamless collaboration and shared commitment to celebrating and uplifting the nursing community. Their ability to work cohesively—bringing together diverse ideas, perspectives, and talents—created a strong sense of unity and purpose. Each member contributed time, creativity, and energy, demonstrating a collective effort that went far beyond expectations. Their positive attitudes were evident in every interaction, fostering an environment of encouragement, respect, and enthusiasm that made the planning process just as meaningful as the celebration itself.
What truly set this group apart was their unwavering motivation to create a lasting and meaningful celebration for nurses. They approached every detail with intention, ensuring the recognition felt genuine, inclusive, and memorable. Despite competing responsibilities, the committee remained dedicated, energized, and focused on their shared goal. Their passion was contagious, inspiring others to engage and participate, ultimately creating a celebration that strengthened morale and reinforced a culture of appreciation across the organization.

In addition to planning daily events, they invested extra time to ensure inclusivity across shifts and departments, enhancing staff engagement and satisfaction. Orthopedic and Epic PIVOT Registry
Team Members: Antonio Cusano, Orthopaedic Surgery Resident • Orthopaedic Surgery; Amanda Hughes-LeFranc, Univ Director • Musculoskeletal Sig Prog - MSI; Naomi Donat, Application Analyst 3, Harmony Lipeika, Application Analyst 2 • IT Clinical Systems
Nominated by: Dirk Stanley, Asst Prof/Clinical • Chief Information Officer
Dr. Cusano, Dr. LeFranc-Hughes, Naomi, and Harmony worked side-by-side for nearly a year to bring the knee (ACL and non-ACL) patient registry into Epic. This was not an easy or straightforward process. Along the way, the team encountered Epic build challenges, resets, and moments where it would have been easier to simply move forward with the existing solution. Instead, they chose to pause, rethink the approach, and advocate for a better outcome.
At one point, the team was close to going live, but recognized there was an opportunity for a stronger, more effective build. Rather than settling, they leaned into that opportunity and continued refining the process. That decision reflects the mindset this group consistently demonstrated—focused, thoughtful, and committed to doing it right, not just getting it done.
The end result is a registry that automatically sends questionnaires to patients, regardless of whether they use MyChart, while supporting the collection of key baseline data and up to 10 years of post-operative follow-up information. These questionnaires help assess how a patient’s knee feels and functions in daily life and will provide valuable insight for providers evaluating treatment progress over time.
This work is an excellent example of what can be accomplished through shared ownership, persistence, collaboration, and a positive attitude. As this and other questionnaires go live, the initiative will also help reduce costs by sunsetting a third-party vendor application while keeping all patient responses and related information securely within Epic.
Outpatient Orthopedics Heroic Response Team
Team Members: Jill Arcari-Couture, Nurse Practitioner, Kayla Callanan, Clinical Patient Navigator, Jacqueline Espana, Clinic Office Assistant, Thaya Gallagher, Clinic Office Assistant, Jacqueline Ortiz, Cast Technician • UMG - Orthopedics; Anthony Parrino, Assoc Prof/Clinical, Craig Rodner, Professor/Clinical • Orthopaedic Surgery; Kevin Becker, Asst Prof/Clinical • Neurosurgery, Yanira Ortiz, Medical Assistant • UMG - Orthopedics
Nominated by: Kaitlyn Burns, Neurodiagnostic Tech, Katy Coyle, Univ Director • UMG - Orthopedics; Dr. Isaac Moss, Dept Head, Orthopaedic Surgery • Orthopaedic Surgery
Katy and Isaac: We could not be more honored or proud to nominate our Orthopedic staff for a PAWS Award in recognition of their heroic, life-saving actions.
On April 7, 2026, a patient’s husband experienced a cardiac arrest in the waiting room of the Orthopedic Clinic in the MSI. Jill Arcari, APRN, immediately jumped into action, directing staff to call 911 and obtain the AED, oxygen, and ambu bag, while simultaneously initiating CPR with the assistance of Kayla Callanan, RN. Dr. Craig Rodner and Dr. Anthony Parrino assisted by removing clothing to allow for rapid AED application. Medical Assistants Jackie Vega and Yanira Ortiz quickly provided hands-on support and retrieved the necessary life-saving equipment. In addition, Yanira provided comfort and reassurance to the patient’s visibly distraught wife during the emergency.
The patient required two shocks from the AED, and the team successfully stabilized him before transport to the Emergency Department. He was taken immediately to the cath lab, where he underwent stent placement. We are thrilled to report that the patient is recovering well with no long-term deficits.
The remarkable teamwork, composure, and rapid response demonstrated by these orthopedic team members are a true testament to the values we embody at UConn Health. Emergencies like this are extremely rare in our department, and we could not be prouder of this exceptional group.
This event also reinforced the critical importance of CPR training, preparedness, and readiness in responding to unexpected medical emergencies. We truly believe the outcome may not have been as positive without the immediate actions of Jill Arcari, APRN, and Kayla Callanan, RN, who initiated CPR so quickly. The lessons learned from this experience further highlight the value of teamwork, training, and remaining prepared to respond when every second matters.
Kaitlyn:
This team exemplifies Togetherness, Attitude, and Motivation at the highest level through their immediate, coordinated response to a life-threatening emergency in an outpatient setting. The event began when front desk staff member Thaya Gallagher witnessed the patient’s husband collapse and immediately called for help from the clinical team. Her quick recognition and decisive action set everything in motion. Jacqueline Esperanza also supported communication and coordination at the front desk, ensuring the team was alerted without delay.
From that moment forward, the response was seamless and truly collective. Medical assistants quickly mobilized and alerted APRN Jill Arcari, while team members simultaneously retrieved emergency equipment, including the AED, oxygen, and ambu bag, and called 911. Providers and staff worked side by side without hesitation, each stepping into a critical role to support the resuscitation effort. Even in the midst of this high-stress situation, Clinical Coordinator Cindy Poglitsch ensured patient comfort by providing a pillow, demonstrating that compassionate care remained a priority alongside life-saving intervention.
What makes this response especially remarkable is that it occurred in an outpatient orthopedic clinic—not a hospital or emergency department. These types of emergencies are rare in this setting, yet the team responded with confidence, urgency, and professionalism as if they managed these situations every day. There was no pause, no uncertainty—only action. Every individual contributed, communicated effectively, and trusted one another, demonstrating true teamwork. Their collective attitude was one of calm determination, and their motivation was clear: to save a life. This extraordinary collaboration not only reflects the highest standards of clinical excellence but also embodies the core values of UConn Health. It is a powerful example of how togetherness, the right attitude, and strong motivation can lead to truly life-saving outcomes.
This team went far beyond the call of duty by responding to a life-threatening emergency with a level of urgency, coordination, and clinical excellence that directly contributed to saving a life. In an outpatient orthopedic setting—where emergencies of this magnitude are rare—this group immediately transitioned from routine patient care to advanced life-saving intervention without hesitation. Team members simultaneously initiated CPR, retrieved and operated the AED, administered oxygen with an ambu bag, called 911, and coordinated efforts across clinical and non-clinical staff. This level of rapid organization and execution is typically expected in emergency departments, yet this team delivered it flawlessly in an ambulatory environment.
What truly sets this apart as above and beyond is not only the clinical response, but the collective commitment to the patient and family. Front desk staff recognized the emergency and activated help without delay. Clinical staff and providers worked side by side seamlessly, demonstrating trust, preparedness, and shared responsibility. Even in the intensity of the moment, attention was given to the patient’s dignity and comfort, reflecting deep compassion alongside technical skill.
Additionally, this event highlights the impact of ongoing preparedness efforts such as mock drills and BLS training, which this team clearly internalized and translated into real-world action. Their response reinforces the importance of these initiatives and elevates the standard of care across outpatient services.
By stepping outside of their expected daily roles and performing with the precision, teamwork, and compassion of a coordinated emergency response unit, this team not only improved the immediate outcome for this patient but also demonstrated the very best of UConn Health. Their actions embody a deep commitment to patient care, organizational excellence, and the mission we stand for.

When the organization’s strategic plan identified improving payer rates—what insurance companies reimburse for services—it set off a series of four separate negotiations over nine months, each successfully concluded with rates that better reflect the quality and care UConn Health provides. Sounds simple—just go negotiate—but the reality is far more complex. This group came together behind the scenes, often on short notice and with rapidly changing direction, to ensure patients and providers were informed, proposals were carefully developed and thoroughly analyzed, and communications were timely and accurate. Their work included letters, cards, emails to impacted patients, website updates, internal newsletters, and media responses, all aimed at keeping stakeholders informed. They also produced several billboards that helped increase visibility and, in some cases, prompted insurers to ask for them to stop.
This was uncharted territory for the organization, particularly during the period when negotiations with Aetna moved all the way to out-of-network status. Despite the uncertainty, the team adapted quickly, figured out what needed to be done, and executed together with precision and urgency. Each person contributed their part, often under tight timelines and shifting guidance, to keep the process moving forward.
The results speak for themselves: millions in additional revenue to UConn Health and meaningful progress toward reimbursement levels that better reflect the high-quality, patient-first care delivered by the state’s flagship academic medical center.
Precert Continuity of Care
Team Members: Giuliana DeFilippis, Eva Dimitriadis, Kristine Masis, Patient Access Representative, Stephanie Soto, Financial Coordinator • Patient Access; Takasha Brewer, Clinical Coordinator 2 • UMG - Internal Medicine
Nominated by: Megan Joseph, Manager, Patient Access • Patient Access
This group of precertification employees took on new tasks and responsibilities requiring precision, urgency, and attention to detail to secure continuity of care authorizations for patients whose insurance plans were impacted by contract negotiations. They consistently went above and beyond to communicate documentation requirements to clinic staff and followed up diligently to ensure authorizations were in place for patients who qualified for continuity of care services.
They worked closely together each day to navigate workflows and authorization determinations that were not always consistent, striving to remain transparent and communicative with clinic teams so patients could be reassured they would continue to receive high-quality care at UConn Health.
These team members further distinguished themselves by maintaining open communication with clinic staff, helping ensure patients had confidence that they would remain under the care of their providers during ongoing contract negotiations. This often involved contacting insurance representatives, meeting with clinic teams to provide education, and managing complex authorization processes to protect both patients and UConn Health from financial risk.
UMG - Storrs
Team Members: Christina Caggiano, Christine Combies, Staff Nurse CN2 - Outpatient; Jessica Canfield, Medical Assistant, Mary Ethier, Cast Technician, Kelly Graff, Clinic Office Assistant, Matthew Hall, Assoc Prof/Clinical, Shivonne Johnson, Clinical Coordinator • UMG - Orthopedics Storrs Center; Zachary Maass, Asst Prof/Clinical • Orthopaedic Surgery; Chirstopher Olszewski, Diagnostic Rad Tech • UMG - Storrs Administration; Maria Padegimas, Clinic Office Assistant • UMG - Family Practice Storrs Center; Craig Ryan, Asst Prof/Clinical • Emergency Medicine; John Sullivan, Family Medicine Sports Med Fellow • Family Medicine; Christopher Watkins, Univ Director • UMG - Administration
Nominated by: Carin Dulin, Clinical Practice Manager 1 • UMG - Storrs Administration
The Storrs team demonstrated exceptional togetherness, teamwork, and professionalism during a critical patient emergency. Shortly after a routine injection, a patient experienced a code blue, and staff immediately recognized the severity of the situation, responding with coordinated and decisive action. Every team member—including COAs, MAs, Radiology Technologists, nurses, physicians, and management—worked seamlessly together to stabilize the patient and ensure a safe transfer to the Emergency Department.
During this code blue event in the Storrs Outpatient office, the staff demonstrated extraordinary teamwork and initiative that went far beyond routine expectations.
